1. Breville Bambino Plus
The Bambino Plus, despite its cute name is a serious machine. It's packed with features and makes it a great choice for anyone who wants to upgrade from the standard Breville espresso machines or need an automated alternative to manual.
It has a PID controller that does the heavy lifting of controlling temperature and pressure so that it's ready to drink the moment you press the button. It also uses the technology known as Thermo Jet that allows it to warm up in only 3 seconds, so you can enjoy your espresso faster than most other espresso machines for home use (which take between 10 and 30 minutes to warm up).
The machine was designed with simplicity in mind. There is only one button that controls everything. You can choose either a single or double shot as well as determine the time of brewing as well, which is something you have to do manually with other espresso machines of this price range. The brushed stainless steel finish gives it a classy appearance, and its small dimensions make it ideal for those with limited countertop space or a cramped kitchen.
The Bambino Plus comes with everything you need to get started with brewing. This includes a steel 54mm tamper and a dose trimming tool. 2. De'Longhi Stilosa
The De'Longhi Stilosa is an affordable and well-rounded manual espresso machine that's suitable for both coffee lovers and beginners alike. It's user-friendly, looks nice on the counter, and makes excellent cappuccinos, espressos, and lattes. It does have some drawbacks that should be considered.
The Stilosa scored below average for its brew control and quality in our metrics for brewing. This was mostly due to its small filter baskets and the absence of temperature control, both of which restrict your ability to modify the extraction process. We did however like the fact that it takes only a few minutes for the machine to warm up and also that it provides the ability to adjust in the spout's spout's height.
The unit also comes with a convenient water reservoir that can hold up to 34 ounces. It has a built in level indicator to let you know when it's time to refill. It's removable, which can be useful if you need to clean it or don't have access an indoor sink. The model also comes with a drip pan that is removable, which allows you to use taller cups under the spout.
In our steaming performance metrics, the Stilosa also came up short. This resulted from its lack of control of the steam temperature, and lack of pre-infusion options. Both of these are features that are common in machines that cost more. Despite these flaws we were pleased with the fact that it doesn't require much maintenance and is backed by a one-year warranty. In terms of price and performance the De'Longhi Stilosa makes a great addition to any coffee bar. It's a little easier to use than the other models we've tested, and will save you money over the cost of cafe drinks.
3. Breville Barista Express Impress
The Breville Express Impress Barista (that's quite a mouthful don't you agree?) This machine is intended for people who are new who are interested in coffee. This single boiler, pumps-driven machine is designed to make it simple for anyone to pull an espresso shot without sacrificing flavor or consistency in the brewing.
First of all, it takes the guesswork out of adjusting the grinder, tamper and brew group settings by using its simple-to-use controls. You can also choose between single or double shots and choose the desired temperature. The built-in thermocoil heater makes sure that your espresso is ready to go within 30 seconds. This is much faster than the 30 minutes that most single boiler machines need to reach temperature.
The "impressive" dosing-andamping system that is integrated with the tamper, automatically dials in the right amount of ground coffee per shot. The system utilizes an integrated sensor to gauge the depth of the basket, and adjusts amount of ground coffee dispersed. And if you're feeling a little less confident in your ability to manually control the grind size, water temperature and dosing, the machine comes with several presets to aid you.
The Barista Express Impress also comes with the famous single hole steam wand, which can produce some pretty stunning latte art. This is the same wand that you will find in Breville's more advanced, high-end Barista Express models, and it works a treat.
I'm not a fan of coffee shortcuts, fully automated machines, or even pods. However, the Impress does exactly what it says without being intimidating or taking the fun out of making an espresso. I'm happy to give it a thumbs up for that!
4. Diletta Mio
The Diletta Mio makes a great alternative for home baristas who are adamant about quality, design and user-friendliness. Its sleek design, professional grade components, and constant performance make it a stunning addition to your coffee bar. It's also a good option for beginners who want to understand the basics of steaming and espresso without being overwhelmed by the programming and complexity.
The brew heater that is controlled by PID is among its most striking features. It ensures rapid warm-up times and stable temperature water. This is important, especially for espresso, as even tiny variations in temperature of the water can affect the taste and quality.
Another noteworthy feature is steaming thermoblock that is separate to the Diletta, which allows you to brew espresso and steam your milk at the same time. This can be a major time-saver, and it helps ensure that your milk has the right texture for your drinks. It also conserves energy by only using power when it's needed.
This machine comes with a pressure gauge on the head of the group. It's a nice feature because it lets you monitor the pressure of your extraction live. You can alter the OPV to get a more precise extraction. This is usually reserved for machines costing much more.
